Woven into the plot are the stories of the people around her, a guy who wants to save her, a friend who drowns herself, and adults who don't understand that control doesn't cure pain. The series does not romanticize destruction, it honestly shows the physical and emotional consequences of addiction, shame, aggression, lies and powerlessness, as well as the rare moments when there is a chance for help. The main intrigue here is not whether a catastrophe will happen, but whether the heroine will be able to choose life when destruction has become a common way of feeling. An overdose leaves a strong impression and works as a warning, because it reminds you that addiction often begins not with the desire to die, but with the desire to feel something.
